ANTIEPILETIC DRUGS by HPLC

 

Antiepileptic drugs are a group of different pharmaceuticalsused in the treatment of epiletic seizures. Anticonvulsants are also increasingly being used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, since many seem to act as mood stabilizers, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain is an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

Lamotrigine (LTG) is an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It is also used off-label as an adjunct in treating depression. For epilepsy, it is used to treat focal seizures, primary and secondary tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

Clozapine (CLZ) is an antipsychotic medication used to treat severe schizophrenia.

N-Desmethylclozapine,  or norclozapine (NCLZ) is a major active metabolite of the clozapine. Unnlike clozapine, it possesses intrinsic activity at the D2/D3 receptors, and acts as a weak partial agonist at these sites.

Antiepileptic drugs should be used carefully, with consideration of medication interactions and potential side effects. Their levels have to be constantly monitored in patients treated with this drugs.
