Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 2 belong to the family of Herpesviridae containing a double-stranded DNA genome of about 150 Kb. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 (HSV-1) and HSV-2 are common viral pathogens that cause superficial mucocutaneous lesions that can progress to systemic infections. HSV-1 and HSV-2 are also known to disseminate to the central nervous system, leading to encephalitis and meningitis. The rapid detection in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of these infections is necessary to make it possible to adapt treatment appropriately. The isolation and discrimination of HSV-1 from HSV-2 was historically performed by using virus culture and immunofluorescence; in recent years, the development of molecular diagnostic methods, such as the highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR (RT-PCR), has facilitated early diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Rely-AMP HSV1-2 is an in vitro assay for the detection and quantitation of HSV1-2 viral DNA  in human cerebrospinal fluid. Rely-AMP HSV1-2 provides all necessary reagents for reliable extraction and HSV DNA detection.
