The TEL(ETV6) /AML1(CBFA2,RUNX1) is a gene fusion resulting from a t(12;21)(p13;q22) chromosomal translocation. Although it occurs in only about 3% of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cases, it is the most common genetic rearrangement in B-lineage pediatric ALL (frequency ~25%).  The breakpoint at TEL occurs invariably in intron 5 and three translocation breakpoints in AML1 have been described, although two are more common. The TEL moiety of the chimeric protein converts AML1 from an activator to a transcriptional repressor. However, alternative mechanisms of TEL-AML1 activity have also been suggested like sequestration of transcriptional cofactors to the cytoplasm or dimerization with wild-type protein.

Rely-AMP TEL/AML1 is an in vitro Real Time polymerase chain reaction assay for the direct, quantitative detection TEL/AML1 fusion transcript. Housekeeping gene ABL is a reference for relative quantitation. Rely-AMP TEL/AML1 provides all necessary reagents for RNA extraction, reverse transcription and cDNA detection.
