Legionellae are facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacteria found in soil and water environments, where they parasitize and proliferate within free-living protozoa which can serve as a  transmission vehicle and as a protective shell against disinfection or heat treatment. In drinking water supply systems, legionellae can survive in dead-end tubings, stagnated water in plumbings, or seldom-used facilities. The pathogen is transmitted via small droplets of water, e.g., aerosols from cooling towers, showerheads, or air conditioners. In the human lung, it is able to enter and replicate within alveolar macrophages, causing a severe pneumonia.

Within the species L. pneumophila, human infection is caused primarily (but not exclusively) by a limited number of serogroups—serogroups 1, 4, and 6. L. pneumophila is the most frequent cause of human legionellosis, better known as Legionnaire’s disease in the Legionellaceae family. It is also a relatively common cause of community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia in adults.

Rely-AMP LEGIONELLA PNEUMOPHILA is an in vitro polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the direct, qualitative/quantitative detection of Legionella pneumophila and Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 from water. Rely-AMP LEGIONELLA PNEUMOPHILA provides all necessary reagents for reliable legionella pneumophila/ Legionella pneumophila  serogroup 1 extraction andDNA detection.

The kit is designed for the detection of the Legionella pneumophila/ Legionella pneumophila  serogroup 1 genomic DNA based on the amplification of the specific sequence of the Legionella pneumophila MIP gene and Legionella pneumophila  serogroup 1 WZM gene and concurrently on the amplification of the sequence of the gene for RNasi by means of the Real time PCR.
